The art of choosing an antenna

Selecting an antenna is complex, since it depends on technical performance, cost, the product design and regulatory requirements.

Given the product requirements we will recommend antenna type, either an off the shelf antenna that is mounted on the board or connected through a wire, or a custom antenna that is integrated into the circuit board.

Svep Design Center has worked with wireless technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, ZigBee, LoRa, RFID and NFC, but also GSM, LTE, GPS and ISM-band solutions.

How we develop antennas

We design the radio electronics, where we either select existing antenna components and impedance-match these, or tailor antennas that are drawn directly onto the circuit board.

Existing antennas in the form of components that are assembled in the same way as other electronics add a cost but can be a better solution for products that are manufactured in smaller manufacturing volumes.

On the other hand, a custom printed circuit board antenna may be much more suitable for slightly larger production volumes, although it may involve more work, as it usually means lower manufacturing costs.

Another advantage of tailor-made shielded antennas is that it allows a smaller form factor for, for example, portable products or products with a unique design.

Testing and verification

In our process, in addition to technical requirements for performance, cost and size, we also navigate the regulatory requirements set by USA (FCC), Europe (CE), CTIA and SAR, as well as the special requirements that many operators place on products connected to their networks.
